The Collection: Sweet as Cherries

The previous week’s prompt provided by Charli Mills to the Word Wranglers was to write a story in 99 words about cherries. From the site:

July 25, 2022, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story sweet as cherries. It can be about the fruit or something cherries represent. Why is it sweet? Can you use contrast to draw out the beauty? Go where the prompt leads!

For this prompt, this pedometer geek writer wrote the following:

Bing Cherry Memories

I knew Cammie throughout school, but in high school, she became my best friend.  Spending days at the pool, we followed up by spending evenings coloring or playing various games at my home.

At her house, we’d needlepoint or write mysteries, using certain phrases. There, Cammie’s parents gave us huge bowls of Bing cherries as a snack, expecting us to eat them all.

As an adult buying Bing cherries for my family, I realized just how generous they were. Cherries are expensive particularly the vast quantities they gave us, yet to my knowledge they never begrudged us a one.

~Nancy Brady, 2022

To this day, this pedometer geek loves Bing cherries, and my husband and I purchase them throughout the season. I have Dr. and Mrs. MacPherson to thank for this love of these sweet cherries. Not only were they generous with snacks, but they allowed their daughter and I to make all sorts of messes over the years. Mrs. MacPherson was also our Girl Scout leader for several years, and our meetings took over most of their home week after week throughout the school year. I think our troop had 20-30 members.

About pedometergeek

A pharmacist by profession, a haiku poet by nature, I read and write. I have a book of haiku, Ohayo Haiku, and another somewhat alternative haiku book, Three Breaths, but write other genres. I also read...lots of novels! My favorite is, and remains, Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged but I am also a big Harry Potter fan. I truly am a pedometer geek strapping on my pedometer as soon as I awaken.
