Hero: A 99-word Flash Fiction

This week’s prompt over at http://www.Carrotranch.com was to write a 99 word (no more, no less) flash fiction about a gnome and go where the prompt led. This is the pedometer geek’s take on the prompt which is tentatively titled Hero. (I must admit that I am not happy with the title so suggestions are welcomed.)

Hero

Instead of a horse, the little bearded man named Harry rode a wildebeest he had recently purchased. He had been granted an audience with the ruling monarch, who raised a sword to each of his shoulders. It was unusual to have an American granted such an honor, but his bravery warranted it. He was armed with only a utensil that sliced through the toughest meat.

The newspaper article said it the best:

Harry, a hairy gnome from Nome riding his new gnu, kneeled, and then was knighted by the king. It was said his weapon was a steak knife.

Nancy Brady, 2018

See all the flash fictions at http://www.Carrotranch.com or consider writing one.

About pedometergeek

A pharmacist by profession, a haiku poet by nature, I read and write. I have a book of haiku, Ohayo Haiku, and another somewhat alternative haiku book, Three Breaths, but write other genres. I also read...lots of novels! My favorite is, and remains, Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged but I am also a big Harry Potter fan. I truly am a pedometer geek strapping on my pedometer as soon as I awaken.

Fun. A wonderful headline heralded for Harry the hero!

    (I haven’t gotten those PC’s out yet – hopefully this week…)

    • Thanks, Jules. I was being silly with this week’s prompt. I was hoping to come up with a name with a silent letter at the beginning, but my brain just couldn’t manage it. So I chose Harry (hairy) instead. Sometimes I think I really don’t belong there with my irreverence.

On the other hand, I am enjoying your Banking series and am learning so much about the banking lingo, too. ~nan

  2. Thanks Jules. In retrospect, I could have called it Gyro, but that might have been pushing the silent letter, homonym thing just a bit too much.

I didn’t even post anything for this week’s prompt. I had it written, mostly (still had to edit out a few words to get it down to 99 words), but then got too busy and missed the cutoff. Oh well, there is always next week.

Happy Hanukkah to you, Marty, and your family.
