Another of the Miss America Sisters who will be participating in the upcoming patriotic program Celebrate America is Dorothy Benham. She wore the crown in 1977, but has continued to make her presence felt in many ways since.
During her reign she had the opportunity to travel with some others in the Miss America USO Troupe. They visited and performed for our troops who were serving in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Guam. Further, she was the host and a performer for the USO’s 40th Anniversary Celebration in, Stuttgart, Germany as well as performing with Brooke Shields and the USO for President and Mrs. Reagan at the Statue of Liberty Bi-Centennial Celebration.
Performance highlights for this classically trained lyric-coloratura soprano include singing the National Anthem for one of the 1979 World Series games, performing with Bob Hope and Doc Severinsen, being an original cast master of the Tony and Grammy Award winning Broadway show, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, and others too numerous to mention. She has taken the stage with Symphony orchestras and operas as well as working in television and radio as a model and spokesperson.
She keeps her hands in the pageant, too, as she has judged many of the state pageants as well as co-hosted and judged the national event over the years since she received her crown.
As if she weren’t busy enough with all that she does as a Miss A. Sister, Dorothy is also the proud mother of six children and three grandchildren.
Join her and her other Miss A. Sisters on October 3, 2015 at 7:20PM at the Sandusky State Theatre in this inaugural show that will benefit four local charities.
